Frangokastello: It took its name from the Venetian castle built there in 1371. Here you find several taverns, shops and apartments, like Apartments Stavris. Frangokastello lies in the South West of Crete, in a natural plain boarding the sea, with many olive trees. The White Mountains surround this plain in the North. Just behind the fortress there is a nice sandy beach, with rented beds and umbrellas. There water stays knee deep for about 50 meters, so a nice place for children to play.

In 1828 a celebrated battle for independence was fought against the Turks at Frangokastello. Hundreds of Sfakiots led by Hadzi Michali Daliani, a Greek adventurer attempting to spread the War of Independence from the mainland to Crete. Instead of hiding in the mountains, as most rebels did in this area, he stayed in the castle with his soldiers. Unfortunately, they were massacred and their martyrdom became legendary. Locals will claim that to this day, on or around the 17th of May, the ghosts of Daliani and his army march from the castle in the soft light of dawn. They are called 'drossoulites', or dew shadows.

For 39 years we are providing holiday accommodation in our Hotel in Chora Sfakion.

  • Since 1995 in Frangokastello we have 24 studios and apartments directly at our beach. Without crossing a road you can reach the sea
  • All studios and apartments have balconies overlooking the garden and direct sea view, and are equipped with a refrigerator and cooking facilities. You have the option to use the air conditioning. Each studio has a bathroom, with private shower and toilet.
  • The accommodation contains 21 apartments for 2 to 3 people (approx. 27 square meters) and 3 larger apartments for 3 to 4 people (approx. 37 square meters). There are 3 2-rooms apartments available, by combining 2 studios with an inside door, thus accommodating families of 4 persons, or 2 adults and up to 3 children.
  • The studios are cleaned every second day, and fresh towels, blankets and sheets are supplied
  • Around the building is a nice green garden where you can sit in the shade
  • At the reception you can get advice for your trips
  • There are road connections to the west, to Chora Sfakion, and to the east and north. An ideal place for your sightseeing trips on our beautiful island! We have a private free parking place
  • There is a cafe-bar offering breakfast and refreshments
  • Various shops and excellent taverns are on short distance. A minimarket is just opposite the street
  • The building lies 50 metres from the road, so it's a safe place for children to play
  • Frangokastello is a quiet village, without night clubs, discos and motorised water sports. You find several other huge sandy beaches on short distance. The White Mountains are always in sight, and offer several hiking paths, and famous gorges to cross
  • Car rental and delivery at your studio, or at the airport, on request
  • Taxi transfers can be arranged from and to the airports.

I've just returned from a holiday in Crete (Studios Stavris, Frangokastello) with a couple of vegetarian friends. They were amazed at the choice that was available to them (they do occasionally eat fish - although their recourse to this was not a matter of neccessity.) At first, we thought that our host (Aristotelis Perrakis) was being diplomatic when he told us that all the eating places were good. He was, however, merely being accurate. We found the Vrahos to be of particular merit for vegetarian dishes, (dolmades, stuffed peppers, tomatoes, abergines, artichokes, spinach pie to name a few) with the Oasis and Flisvos providing excellent fish. I've found the south coast to be rather better than the north in this regard. Food aside - a brilliant holiday!

We've now found time to let you know how much we enjoyed our stay at Studios Stavris.
For us the location was superb and the accommodation was perfect for our needs.
The temptation to use the air conditioning was outweighed by opening the doors to the balcony and having just the sound of the sea.
We ate at a different taverna each night and enjoyed every meal.
We would recommend Frangokastello and the Studios for a layed back holiday with excellent service from the owner.

Frangokastello is a charming, peaceful and traditional village on the south coast of Crete. It offers splendid sandy beaches, as you can see on the pictures above. The water is getting deeper very slowly, so this is the ideal spot for parents to let their children play in the sea. Even 50 meters outside in the sea the water is only knee deep.

Frangokastello is 75 kilometers from Chania airport and 150 kilometers from Heraklion airport.

An ideal spot for a relaxing family holiday, far away from mass tourism.
